There are many reasons why you might consider a refresher course and they could be any of the following:-

  1. You passed your test ages ago but not driven since and just want some reassurance you haven't forgotten how to drive.
  2. You've been driving for many years but would like to update your skills
  3. You've been in an accident and you're nervous at getting back behind the wheel again
  4. You want to save fuel and learn new techniques of eco-safe driving
  5. You just want to prove to yourself you are a good driver
  6. You want to take your kids out to practice and want to polish up your skills so not to teach them bad habits
  7. You live in Milton Keynes and you just hate roundabouts! Especially those down by B&Q!

First of all let me reassure you. I am not going to teach you to drive! You can already drive. It is not going to be like when you first learned to drive. It is not going to be like returning to school! It's not going to be like that dreaded driving test again!

It's about being shown a more advanced approach to driving. Trying a defensive approach to compensate for the "other guy" driving like an accident waiting to happen; trying a smoother way to drive to save fuel, money and the environment.

An accident generally has two ingredients:

  1. Someone makes a serious error; that "other guy" that causes all the accidents.
  2. Someone else didn't see it coming! You.

It is generally accepted that one of the parties in the accident could have avoided the accident. The "other guy" didn't have to make an error, or, you could have seen it coming and taken appropriate action early enough to avoid it.

95% of all road accidents that happen are due to poor hazard awareness.

So if you've had an accident or a near miss and you're not the one who made the error, then you're the one who didn't see it coming and you'd like to be better prepared in future! I can't rid the roads of all those other bad drivers. Seeing hazards develop and assessing the risks is what keeps many safe drivers out of trouble. This is the skill you can improve. Risk Management or Hazard Management is the core skill of safe drivers. While others are increasing the risks, you can compensate and reduce them if you spot the clues early enough.
